The Skook

12pm wake-up. Fierce thunderstorms, tons of lightning, and torrential down pour overnight. Woke up a number of times to, what I thought was a tree falling on my tent. I am alive and well. Weather this morning is great. Skies cleared up. Tony, Chad’s friend from Oregon, arrived this morning. Let the Tony-isms begin. For shizzle.

We had our first wildlife ‘encounter’ this morning during breakfast when a chipmunk ran away with one of our cinnamon raison bagels. We did not put up much of a fight. Enjoy it little guy.

Hit the trail for our first ride of the trip on the Skookum Flats which is just a quick ride from the camp site. The trail was slick from the rain and we had a few minor slips but Silver Suzy, Black Mamba, and Grey Ghost were ready for the challenge. It was really just a warm-up ride of 10 miles and only about 500ft of elevation gain. The ride takes you through a densely populated forest of evergreens. Imagine a bunch of umbrellas. We came upon a sweet 1000ft waterfall.

At some dogs and potato salad for dinner. The potato salad could have doubled for cement mortar.

7:30am wake up. Slept like a baby last night. Did it rain? Time to get out the food and have a big breakfast. Mike up yet? No… Two walks, a short bike ride, campground facilities have now been well visited. Hmm, I’ll make a second coffee. 10:30am. Movement in mike’s tent? No, a branch fell. I’ll organize the van. 11:30. Van gear now organized form A to Z front to back. Tony has arrived. Smokey the bear, minus the hat, has now come out of hibernation. Time to ride. The Pac northwest amazon….wet, lush, with skyscraping trees. Rode a ten mile jaunt. The trial flowed..the only hindrance were the stops waiting for Mike and T. 5:00pm, time for dry clothes, beer, din dins.

why does this scene sound so eerily familiar?
