7-14-08 Rams

Up around 8:00am. Back to a typical cereal breakfast. Getting gear out of back of knightrider minivan when large male deer walks by…5 feet way. Hiking day. Hit the Road-to-the-Sun road up Logan Pass on way to visitor center. Road-to-the-Sun hangs off the sides of mountains, weaving in and out through Logan Pass, a tight switchback, and then on through the mountains. The scenery was unbelievable, as expected, with huge mountains, some snow and a number of waterfalls. Just Google it. I’m running out of adjectives to describe beautiful scenery. We had to stop for some construction. Chad and I agreed on the attractiveness of a female construction worker. We think we saw her on the cover of Women, Trucks and Dirt.

Quick stop at the Visitor Center. Flipped through some hiking books in the gift store, found a good hike, memorized its route, put the book back, hit the road. Siyah Pass hiking trail. About 10 miles total.

Met some guys at the top. One says he saw a hiker trying to get down the pass from a different route…one that was still covered in snow. He said he saw him slip on the snow ridge …then out of sight…yikes. One of the guys rowed for Darmouth. I said I rowed for Syracuse. Nice conversation followed.

Drove to St. Mary, a town just outside of Glacier located within the Blackfeet Indian Reservation for supplies. Got hosed on firewood. Headed back and ran into about 20 rams on the road licking the salt near the same Visitor Center. Stopped on side of road took some pics and video. Turned around and parked at the Visitor Center for more pics. Then ran into a family of mountain goats…more pics of coarse. Back to campsite for fire, hotdogs, beer and a total beatdown by Chad on Mike playing 500 rummy. Sleep.
